I think we called that the 1970s.
Look at the geometries of good rando bikes and look at the geometries of
the 1970s vintage sport tourers and "10-speeds", some of which were sold
with 26" tires. They're the same or basically the same!
The low to mid level bikes were rejected by the US market. Flat bars
had a lot to do with that.
