Surly's, etc, are certainly a little heavy for racing, and one could
probably do better at their pricepoint. Regardless, any drop-bar, 700c bike
should work fine for entry-level cross as long it has decent clearance and
cantilever brakes. Likewise, many of the bikes you see at cross races have
enough braze-ons for light touring (until recently, even the top end
Specialized's had low rider mounts on their carbon forks).
