Spring Cleaning

This time of year people are cleaning out garages, attics
and storage sheds. Old bicycles and parts are showing up all over
(no I do not pick through garbage, much). I saw a very dusty, little
used Peugout UO-8. It was fun to look at, but stayed were it was
along with the 8 track tapes.

I did pick up a frame called "Openroad." It looks like a medium
quality low end bike from the early 80s. It says 4130 steel on it, but
does not say what country it was made in. I seem to remember that Huffy
might have tried to make a real bike back in the 80s, but soon realized
that disposable pot metal products were their true market niche. Anybody
know about Openroad bikes?

From a very corroded unidentified frame, I ended up with a leather
saddle in very good shape. It must have had a cover on it, there is no
rust on metal frame at all and the leather is dry but perfect. Embossed
in the sides is, "Middlemore Coventry," with the usual crown, wreath
and banner design. The back of the seat has a little plate with the
Middlemore name on it, just like my Brooks. The LBS owner just gave it
to me, when I offered to buy it. He said, " Who do you think is going
to buy a leather saddle around here?"

    "Me," I had to reply.

Anyone in the collective BOB memory remember Middlemore saddles
of Coventry?

Still haven't found that Cinelli. There is the story of the all
Campy Huffy track bike for 25 dollars. It probably was a team bike
from the Lemond sponsoring days, and it was sold for something over
a thousand dollars by a local bike mechanic. The guy in the thrift
store said, "Anybody who rides a bike with no brakes you have to
pedal all the time must be totally stupid."

If you come across this old stuff, just a tip. Greg Lemond advises
in his racing book, to avoid those steel three arm spider cranks. The
five arm spiders are much better.

Yes, that was a lower-end British make, back when all decent bikes had
leather saddles.

Is that the book with the great picture of him on the beach, where he's
sitting on his bike looking out to sea? The bike is lying down on the sand
on the derailer side, and he's sitting on the handlebars looking
thoughtful...

Hmm... according to the 1975 Bicycling article, the saddle on my
Viscount was made by Middlemarch. All the markings on the saddle are
'Viscount'.

I have a few things I'd like to sell that I haven't listed previously:

Dura Ace front (clamp-on or braze-on) and rear derailleurs, and downtube =
shifters. Eight-speed, mint condition. These are super nice! $95.

Wheelset: Campy Chorus hubs, 8-speed cassette with hardly any wear. Mavic =
SUP rim in the rear with a Velocity Deep V rim in the front. The rims =
have some wear, but they're in nice shape. Asking $165 including the =
cassette.

Look PP256 pedals, black, basically new. After one ride I've decided I =
prefer the PP296 over this one. $75

Salsa Moto-Ace riser bar, black, new, $25

It's time to clean out my big cardboard box of spare parts. Everything is
OBO and does not included shipping (figure on about $4 for priority
mail). Pictures are available if you're really curious.

- Brooks B-17, non Riv model, bought in panic during the Great Brooks
Scare of '00 ('01?). I really don't need two of these on the shelf. VGC
with a only a little bit of evidence in the sit area. It has probably
<300 miles on it. $60

- Suntour accushift bar cons. These are the black models from 1986 that
Riv used to sell for $45. I'd like $30. VGC except one of the sticker's
clear coating is starting to peel.

- Suntour superbe pro non-aero brake levers. Riv used to sell these for
$40 (having the old catalogs around is pretty handy). These are really
best if you have small hands. I don't. $30.

- Nitto dirtdrop stem, with cable hole. I think this is the 80mm
extension model. This looks almost new. Riv's price is $45, mine is $30.

- Softride Allsop stem. Cro-moly version with a 5.5" extension, 1"
threaded headset. Good condition, a little dirty. AFAIK, Riv never sold
these (but it was on the '94 MB-1). Also $30.

-Ritchey WCS stem, 1" threaded x 5.5" extension x not much rise. No brake
cable hole. It's an attractive titaniumish color. The was Ritchey's top
o' the line stem back in the day. Also VGC, just a few insertion marks.
$20.

- Shimano road SPDs. These are the stupid 1 sided road pedals. PD-A525s?
I'm not sure. They came on an RB-1 I bought used. Free with any order or
$4 for shipping.

It's the detergent. It's pretty caustic. Trisodium phosphate if memory
serves. Remember some article about a child experimentally trying to eat some
and
it severely burned and scarred his throat.

Dear FB's,

Well, it is that time of year again. The time when I clean my office and get
rid of all the stuff I have collected over the past year. I have several
sets of lugs, drop outs, fittings, tubes, etc. that are not regularly
inventoried parts and I have no real use for. Lots of great stuff and maybe
a surprise or two. The whole she-bang goes to the first person who calls
with $300.00 and a valid credit card.

Cheers,

Hi,

Digging through boxes, need to move the following on to make room and
a few $ for new projects:

Timbuk2 small messenger bag with shoulder pad, red, white, and blue
(like Dutch or French flags, depending upon how you look at it). In
very good condition -- oodles of wear left. $28 shipped CONUS

4 Blackburn USA silver alloy bottle cages, used but in very good
shape -- all 4 shipped in the CONUS for $20 total.

One pair Shimano SPD touring shoes, size 48, like new condition, a
bit narrow for my wide feet. $30 shipped in CONUS.

I'll take Paypal or checks.

Thanks,

Spring cleaning is always a good idea because one never knows what they
might turn up in the process.
