Looks like we have a small membership, but growing by 3 or 4 per day. My purpose in starting this list is several fold. I believe that bicycle touring is on the rise. I think that folks of all abilities can benefit from sharing information on this topic. This can include but isn't limited to: - Routes and place descriptions - Tips for packing and unpacking - Weather handling - Duration, destination and "getting there", including tips for handling bikes and gear at airports and train stations - Group and solo touring tips - Camping and credit card touring - Personal ride reports (one of my favorites) - Touring with kids, older folks and the disabled - Point to Point and circuit tours - Foreign countries - More personal ride reports What's my definition of a tour? Could be one day, could be a year or more. I guess it’s more of a pure enjoyment and recreation thing. Touring is the ultimate vacation, at least for me. It's getting out and away from readily available automobile support. Touring can range from an overnight out and back to a campground 30 miles away or a 1 day 400k ride or a 5 month transcontinental oddessy. Take your pick, all forms are welcome here! I'd like to start a touring version of the "warm showers" list - perhaps less formally. A bit of background about me, since I started this list in the first place. My name is Steve Ciccarelli. If anyone is on the ultramarathon list or tandem(AT)hobbes, you'll recognize me. I run a rather large web site at: http://blueridge.infomarket.ibm.com/bikes/ which caters to long distance riding and touring. I'm not a terribly accomplished tourist, having done only a handful of multi-day rides, and in fact I’ve only been riding seriously for the last 2 or so years. But I do a rather lot of distance, having just passed 8000 miles this year - mostly thanks to near-daily commuting. I daydream about loading up front and rear panniers and just "heading out somewhere". I hope that others on this list share that dream. SteveC ----- <| SteveC(AT)dev.infomkt.ibm.com Stephen M.
